When this Pasadena High School graduate signed up for photography classes at PCC, it was only natural that she'd shoot horses for practice. Her family lived near the Eaton Canyon Riding Stables since she was 10 years old. The horses at the nearby stables served as good subjects for her homework, for which she would take her borrowed camera on the weekends. Her hobby transformed into a full-out career after her first photo sold, and she left behind music, art, and journalism.
At a Santa Barbara horse show, she found her first two mentors, a famous equestrian photographer pair, for whom she focused and posed horses at shows all over the country. Later she joined another equestrian photography pair who concentrated their work in California. With help from her mother for the business side of things, she can concentrate on taking shots with her Swedish camera with German lens.
Her expertise consists of six-foot jumps, races won by the nose, and other active moments. With her, horses snap at attention or get down on all fours for formal shots, too. Some horses even show their pleasure with being photographed. These are the horses that perk their ears or raise their heads after discovering a camera is focused on them. Photography has enabled her to see many celebrity horse lovers. She has even had conversations with royalty. She got the chance to rub shoulders with the Queen after taking photos of Princess Anne at the Montreal Olympics. The Queen said she always feels nervous every time her daughter would attempt a high jump. At some point she felt she could do with some variety and tried photographing fork lifts, in addition to her spare time activities, like swimming, back packing, bicycling, panning for gold and sometimes even horse riding.
It is refreshing that perked ears are not a requirement for good fork lift shots.
