David Floyd, Now The OrthoWorx CEO
DePuy Orthopedics named David Floyd as its new president last September 2007. Considered as one of the largest orthopedic device makers, DePuy is a Johnson and Johnson company. It is also the world’s first modern orthopedic company. When compared with other orthopedic company’s projected growth rate, DePuy falls far behind despite having a big name in the field. With Floyd as the president, the company is said to soar high and power up its growth rate. But a few months before he turns 4 years being the president, Floyd submitted a resignation letter and was later on pronounced as the new resignation letter and later pronounced as the new CEO of an orthopedic industry trade association.
What the company lacks is edge over the other companies, stated by an industry analyst. According to an industry analyst, the company lacks edge over other competitors. As the new DePuy President, he is expected to give high ranks and rates to the company. “I think DePuy right now needs to get its mojo back, and David’s got a chance to get it back”, said Robin Young, publisher of industry newsletter Orthopedics This Week. Floyd played a big part in their company’s rising orthopedic business and served as board of the DePuy Franchise Global Management.“We’re confident he will lead the company to new heights and help surgeons continue to raise the standard of orthopaedic care for patients through a commitment to innovation, quality and service excellence”, voiced Mike Mahoney, Company Group Chairman of DePuy Inc. The company was aiming high under the leadership of their new president.
Floyd submitted his resignation letter to the DePuy Orthopedics last March 2011, after almost four years of service. The company’s spokesperson publicized that Floyd resigned to “pursue interests outside the company.” He resigned amidst the big problems faced by the company brought about by the massive recall of their hip devices.DePuy performed well during Floyd’s tenure, but fortunes began to change when they started the recall on their ASR hip replacement system. After receiving a higher-than-normal number of patients who needed revision surgeries, on August 2010, DePuy issued a voluntary recall on their hip devices.
From that time on, several patients have taken legal action against DePuy Orthopedics. These charges are claiming that the company knew the design was defective but continued to introduce it to the market. Through the 510(k) approval process, DePuy introduced ASR to the public in 2005. Though Floyd was still not part of the company by then, there are allegations that he failed to act on warnings and reports about the complications of the product. A worldwide DePuy hip recall was done a few years after initial warnings were given.
