I know that last one sounds crazy but but sometimes I have wondered and maybe you have too!
But really I do not think it's due to any of those causes. I may be criticized for this but this is what I think actually happens ...
This is how a forex robot usually comes into existence: forex experts take a system that has been bringing in profits (or dream up a new one and backtest it), pay a programmer to automate it, and then to recoup the cost of the software development and make something on it too, they sell it to anyone willing to pay.
The critical question comes in the very first step. If the system has been working for the developer for a reasonable time, no problem. But many times they move far too quickly. They rely more or less on backtests. They know that new robots always sell well, so they can easily cover their investment cost on the automation, so there is really virtually no risk in giving it to a programmer the minute they think up something that gives the results on backtests. They do not necessarily wait for live testing.
So they create a new automatic forex trading system. Then of course they want to be sure it will sell. They might possibly do a little live testing, but that's risky! What if it made a loss? They won't want to lie about the results so maybe it would be better not to run it live, but release it immediately. People believe what they read and far too many of them will buy on the backtest results by themselves. Quick! the expert thinks, Let's get it out there now while it still looks like it works!
So what's the problem with backtesting? Nothing, if you believe that its results in the future will be the same as past results. But wait, isn't that the first thing they tell you in the small print on all investment documents? "Past results are not an indicator of future performance ..."
Consider a simple example. You know that the odds of winning on black at roulette are under 50%, don't you? The zero makes it less. I think it is about 48.5%. But distribution patterns mean that if you considered a couple of hundred spins you would probably not get exactly that many blacks. You might easily see 51% black for example.
So what if you did that, took those results and said, Wow, 51% black in backtests! Cool, now I can develop a robot that always bets on black ...
It would be sure to lose in the long term.
Of course the currency trading market is more complicated than a roulette wheel, but I believe that's basically what developers are doing if they build a forex automated trading system based on past results. And I believe that is why they often do not work.
I'm not saying that you should not use forex software, not at all. An automated forex trading system can be a very profitable tool. I am simply saying please consider how the systems that we use have been tested. Do not rush to buy the latest forex robot the same day that it comes out. Wait a while, check the forums and find out how real traders like you get along with new automatic forex trading systems before you thrust your money into the developer's grasping hands.
